The names are emblazoned in Giants lore for eternity: Gregor Blanco, Santiago Casilla, Javy Lopez, Angel Pagan (personal favorite), Jake Peavy, Sergio Romo. Fourteen rings amongst them. And not one will be back in '17. Part of me is sad. Most of me is happy. Don’t get me wrong, I have DEEP love and respect for all these guys…they all played a major part in the SFG’s success of recent years. But prune, we must.
Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area wrote a strong assessment on the status for these guys. His article creates compelling reasons why each of them should not be back. I agree with him. Teams who are too loyal always seem to get burned in the long run by hanging on to players who are done. Maybe these guys aren't done, but each one's tank is darn close to “empty”. Plus, the G-Men have youthful options waiting in the wings.
One of the things I’ve admired about King Bobby Evans is his stern stare on the bow toward the horizon. Of course we know King Brian Sabean plays a heavy hand in strategy with Evans, but they’re both obviously simpatico and objective in their assessment of talent and needs. And it has worked.
To that, I say “hurray”. In Giants Kings I trust. February can’t come soon enough. King Evans is a smart baseball man and deserves this grade...
